Workshops

Would you like to learn how to make traditional Dorset buttons? 
 
 
Rosalind is a member of the Embroiderer's Guild and has been making Dorset Buttons for about thirty years and teaching for the past twenty years.
   
Throughout the year workshops are held in the Dorchester area.
These workshops cover Cross Wheel buttons, Bird's Eyes, Singletons, Grindles, High Tops and Dorset Knobs and may be others too! 
Rosalind can offer a full day covering all button types or shorter 2 hour sessions focusing on particular types, eg Cross Wheels; a beginners level introduction, Colour work and/or beads and ridge patterns with Cross Wheels; Traditional construction of moulded buttons (Knobs and High Tops); Modern construction of fabric based buttons (Singletons, Grindles, Knobs and Birds Eye).
Rosalind also holds short workshops to create items based on the Dorset Cross wheel button including a large Christmas decoration, earrings and also a simple vintage style Posy Brooch.

A series of workshops will be arranged to take place each Autumn and Spring at the Dorset Centre for the Creative Arts, Poundbury, Dorchester, see below for details
 
Alternatively, Rosalind is willing to travel to teach a larger group of students (up to 25) at a suitable venue for a part or whole day, pleas

Tuesday 16th January 2018, 14.00-16.00,  Beginners Dorset Cross Wheel Buttons




At this workshop you will be taught how to work a basic cross wheel button and shown how and where to change colour.  It is suitable for absolute beginners and all materials will be provided.






Tuesday 23rd January 2018, 14.00-16.00, Follow on Dorset Cross Wheel Buttons - Beads and Patterns
This follow on workshop is suitable for those who have mastered basic cross wheel buttons, you will be shown how to add beads to your buttons and how to work the ridge stitches that form the patterns


Tuesday 30th January 2018, 14.00-16.00, Beginners Dorset Buttons - Singletons and Grindles
This workshop is suitable for beginners and will introduce you to some of the fabric based traditional Dorset buttons, the flat Singletons and the round Grindle or sea urchin button, shown left and centre below. 










Tuesday 6th February 2018,14.00-16.00, Follow on Dorset Buttons - Knobs and Birds Eyes
This workshop is suitable for experienced buttoners only and introduces two undeniably fiddly buttons!  The Dorset Knob, which the biscuit is named after, as shown on the right above and the tiny birds eye button.

Tuesday 20th February 2018, 14.00-16.00, Vintage Style Dorset Posy Brooch
This workshop is suitable for beginners and will show you how to make these lovely posy brooches which are based on the traditional Dorset Cross Wheel button.

The finished brooch is easy to wear and would make a perfect gift for Mother’s Day.

All materials will be provided and full instructions given.
